America's favorite small car. introductionhonda civic is one of the most popular compacts sold in the u. Many of us grew up with them because the civic has been a honda trademark for more than 30 years. clever engineering, honda's renowned assembly quality and all the conveniences create an entry-level car that provides more than basic transportation. Honda makes a civic to suit many types of people. Trim levels include cx, dx, lx, ex, hx and si. the least expensive model is the cx hatchback. Even a basic radio costs extra here, though a split/folding rear seat, tinted glass and a rear-window defroster are included. Regardless of body style, the basic dx trim level includes dual outside mirrors, an am/fm radio and adjustable steering column. All sedans and automatic transmission-equipped coupes and hatchbacks come with power steering. Mid-grade lx sedans add air conditioning, power windows and door locks and cruise control. Ex sedans and coupes come with just about everything, including a more powerful engine, a power moonroof and antilock brakes. Automatic transmission adds $800-$1,000 to most models. (see details on pricing & specifications page.). walkaroundclean, efficient styling reflects the purpose of the honda civic. All three body styles use identical sheet metal from front bumper to windshield. They feature a distinct wedge profile rising from front to rear with large headlights and taillights. Careful detailing lends character to a simple form. some of the details that make the civic appealing are also functional. The low cowl and hood line combine with generous glass area to provide exceptional visibility for driver and passengers. All three civics have large doors, and offer handy access to well-shaped stowage spaces in back. interiorcivic interiors are well-designed, neatly executed and more functional than ostentatious. Interior materials seem to have been selected with durability rather than maximum eye appeal in mind. Civics offer 12 cubic feet of luggage space and that can be augmented by folding down the rear seats. A base civic has but three gauges - speedometer, fuel level and coolant temperature - while up-level models add a tachometer. These are lightweight cars, so even the base 106-horsepower engine is more than sufficient. The uplevel choices are rated at 115 and 127 horsepower. All civic engines use 4-valve-per-cylinder technology (16v) for maximum efficiency. In fact, all are mechanically identical with the exception of those used in ex sedans and coupes and hx coupes. These add a variable valve timing system (called vtec by honda) that makes them extraordinarily responsive at any speed. Regardless of output, civic powerplants are exceptionally smooth and economical. a 5-speed manual transmission - one of the easiest-shifting gearboxes on the market - is standard for all civics. The optional 4-speed automatic uses electronic controls to minimize unnecessary shifting when driving up or down hills. Both transmissions are excellent and suit the high-revving characteristics of all three engines. hx coupe's optional continuously variable belt-drive transmission (cvt). It is a fascinating device controlled by what looks like a normal automatic shift lever with three forward ranges, though only drive is necessary in everyday use. Pull away from a stop and the engine revs faster than the car accelerates. The cvt seems a novelty at first, but after a few miles one begins to wonder why it hasn't replaced the automatic option in all civics. there's nothing lacking in the remainder of the civic's mechanical hardware either. It was comfortable at cruising speeds, boasting a ride that was smooth yet well enough controlled to fend off most pavement irregularities. Road and engine noise are always present, but only become obtrusive during hard acceleration. the driving pleasure really begins when the civic is urged through corners. Especially noteworthy is the power steering. Unlike some systems, the civic's steering does not isolate the driver from the road. Body roll is held to a minimum (the front stabilizer bar fitted to uplevel coupes and sedans really does help). The civic shines in these conditions. All civics are compact, with the largest sedan being just over 14 feet long. If economy is the primary motivator, any will do, with top honors going to the base coupe. Luxury, in a relative sense, is available as well, though the price for a full load of amenities puts the civic up against base versions of larger, more substantial cars. the easy part is deciding to make the civic a primary candidate while small-car shopping. The 4wd lx and ex models come standard with a five-speed manual gearbox. Automatic transmission adds $800 to the bottom line. cr-v lx models come standard with air conditioning, an am/fm/cassette stereo, cruise control, map lights, a rear window washer-wiper, and power windows, mirrors and locks. To this, ex models add abs, remote keyless entry, dual power color-keyed mirrors, cd stereo and alloy wheels. walkaroundhonda's cr-v is similar in concept and execution to toyota's rav4. Unlike most suvs, these two mini sport-utilities are based on passenger car platforms. The cr-v is based on honda's subcompact civic line. The rav4 is based on the toyota camry. The cr-v is considerably bigger and roomier than the rav4, however. Second, it maximizes interior volume. interiorlike all hondas, the cr-v's interior is subdued, comfortable, thoughtfully designed, and nicely finished. Big mirrors provide excellent rearward visibility. the instrument panel is straightforward and logical, with secondary controls that are instantly recognizable, particularly to anyone who's ever driven a honda. An exception: power window switches, located on the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel, are a bit awkward when underway. the column-mounted shifter seems out of place in something that calls itself a sport-utility. On the other hand, putting the shift lever on the steering column allowed honda to create a convenient minivan-style pass-through between the front seats. The manual transmission shifter takes up a bit of that space. a handy tray with integrated cupholders flips up between the front seats. Two more cupholders slide out below the climate controls on automatic transmission models. An abundance of storage pockets and bins are located throughout. for all its engaging detail touches, though, the most endearing trait of the cr-v interior is its roominess. There's lots of front headroom and legroom and plenty of rear legroom if the people in the front seats cooperate. There's a sizable cargo space behind the rear seats. The rear seatbacks flip and fold individually to expand cargo space. The cr-v even comes with a picnic table that stows in the rear floor. Pop it out, flip down the legs and it's party time. like the rav4, the cr-v carries its spare tire on a rack mounted on the tailgate. Unlike the rav4, and a lot of other external mounts, the cr-v's is low enough so that it doesn't interfere with vision to the rear. The tailgate on the honda cr-v is a two-piece affair. The glass upper portion lifts up, while the lower portion swings open like a door. The operator must first unlock the window portion, flip it up, and then swing the door open. There is a rear window release inside; it's on the downside of the dashboard, to the left of the driver's left knee. This releases the window, which must be opened before the door. driving impressiongood ride quality is a cr-v strong suit. It's supple enough to absorb the nasty little irregularities of rough pavement without excessive compromise in handling response. part of that is due to its relatively long wheelbase. At 103. 2 inches, the cr-v wheelbase is long for its overall size. That's typical of current honda designs, and it's one of the reasons for honda's success with ride quality. the cr-v isn't quite as quick on its feet as the rav4, but it is thoroughly competent. The torque peak doesn't come until 4500 rpm. As a result, standing-start getaway is sluggish. The 5-speed improves performance in this area considerably. Once it builds up a head of steam, though, the cr-v is quicker than a rav4. That's a little more power than the rav4's 2. 0-liter engine, but the cr-v is a little heavier, so power-to-weight ratios are similar. cr-v's engine is relatively quiet, less noisy than the rav4, at most operating speeds. But both vehicles come with a fair amount of wind noise. the cr-v's all-wheel-drive system primarily drives the front wheels. When system sensors detect loss of traction to the front wheels, it feeds torque to the rear wheels until proper grip is restored. The cr-v does not offer a locking center differential, low-range set of gears, a limited-slip rear differential or traction control. This limits the cr-v's capability in areas with steep climbs, limited traction, or deep sand. So be careful about driving the cr-v on the beach. overall, the cr-v drives like a compact station wagon, which is essentially what it is. There is nothing remotely truck-like about its behavior. Steering is precise and feeds plenty of road feel back to the driver. Front brakes are discs, but the rear uses drum brakes. summarythe honda cr-v is an excellent piece of work. It's much roomier than the rav4. Even with more than 8 inches of ground clearance, the cr-v is not a good choice for off-road use.
