2006 jeep liberty review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Day in and day out, liberty works like a car or wagon. Fold the rear seats and it can move two people and some serious cargo. turn off the pavement, and liberty can negotiate most trails with confidence. True, the liberty gives up some refinement and road agility to do this. It does not ride or handle as well as some of the other small suvs. But the liberty is among the best of the small sport-utilities for drivers who want serious off-road capability on the weekend yet need practicality and affordability during the week. the mid-range renegade looks the part, with its flatter hood, taller grille, off-road foglamps and taillamp guards. Renegade also features functional rock rails and skid plates. All-terrain tires are optional, as are gps navigation and an overhead light bar. but the economy-priced sport and luxury-grade limited models are plenty capable as well, and offer something the renegade does not: the only diesel engine available in a compact or mid-size suv. For 2006, all liberty models come with jeep's electronic stability program (esp), anti-lock brakes (abs), electronic roll mitigation, and all-speed traction control. lineupthe 2006 jeep liberty is available in three trim levels: sport 20,970), renegade 22,860), and limited edition 24,410). A six-speed manual transmission is standard in sport and renegade. Limited deletes renegade's rock rails but adds lots of exterior brightwork. leather for limited is available as part of a big customer preferred option package 1,575) that includes the programmable overhead console, power seat adjusters, deep-tint glass, power heated outside mirrors, a security group, and an am/fm/6cd stereo, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls and infinity speakers. options for all liberty models include a trailer tow group 365), trac-loc locking rear differential 285), power sunroof 700), sirius satellite radio 195), and a tire-pressure monitor. Standard on all models is an electronic stability program (esp), which enhances driver control and helps maintain directional stability under all conditions. The front airbags, which come standard, are multi-stage and will deploy with less force during low-speed collisions or if t. walkaroundwith its seven-slat grille and round headlights, there's no question the liberty looks like a jeep. the liberty's body is tall, providing the driver with a commanding view of the terrain ahead. In its exterior dimensions, the liberty fits between the jeep wrangler and grand cherokee. With an overall length of 174. 4 inches, the jeep liberty is slightly longer than the ford escape. It's longer than the wrangler, but significantly shorter and lighter than the grand cherokee. the renegade model features a flatter hood that complements the traditional round jeep headlimps for a distinctive appearance reminiscent of the hardy old jeep cj3b of 1953-64. Freestanding fog lamps with black bezels, side sills to protect the body from road blast, tow hooks and a bright silver metallic applique across the body-color front fascia add to renegade's rugged appearance. Bolted fender flares, which are gray on sport and body-color on limited, are molded in contrasting accent colors for renegade, and feature chrome-plated attachment details to make sure they are noticed. Tubular roof rails are finished in brushed silver metallic. A black off-road light bar is optional on renegade only. a neat feature on all models: yanking hard on the outside handle of the rear cargo door causes the glass hatch to swing up as the door itself is swinging out, which saves time and effort. Pulling on the handle with less force opens the glass only. Also, the door is hinged on the left and swings open from the right, better for curbside pickups at the airport. Its roomy interior accommodates five passengers and a generous amount of cargo, with 29 cubic feet of usable space behind the second row of seats. Sitting in the liberty gives the driver a sense of spaciousness with 40. 7 inches of headroom, more than other suvs in this class. Door panels are scalloped out for elbow rests, and a grab handle is provided on the passenger's side of the dash. the seats were noticeably improved for 2005 through the use of dual-density foam, but the side bolsters are still soft, a signal that the liberty is set up more to absorb vibration than to be slung around corners. The standard cloth upholstery feels like it will hold up well. The renegade front seats are tailored with unique cloth center panels and vinyl bolsters. The front seats in the limited are more comfortable. A grab handle is provided, but it's located on the a-pillar above the steering wheel, not the perfect position to help shorter people swing inside. the liberty's rear seats are comfortable, capable of holding three people. Two adults should be happy here. Caesar the 160-pound mastiff was happy to ride there. Two full-size garbage cans fit side-by-side back there, too, a feat we haven't seen duplicated in many suvs. Grocery-bag hooks and cargo tie-downs are provided to keep things from rolling around. An optional cargo organizer opens into a shelf with compartment dividers to keep packages in place, and can be folded flat when not in use. fold. The golden eagle's swan song. introductionthe jeep wrangler carries over for 2006 and dealers will likely be selling them down as they prepare for an all-new 2007 model. for 2006, jeep has added more heavy-duty equipment to the base unlimited model. An extended-wheelbase version introduced mid-2004, the wrangler unlimited models are designed to offer more room for people and cargo and improved handling and ride quality on the pavement while maintaining most of the shorter wrangler's legendary off-road capability. for 2006, jeep has brought back the golden eagle package from the 1970s. Built with jeep's 'go anywhere, do anything' design philosophy, the rubicon is a 4x4 gem. in any form, wrangler remains an icon, a symbol of go-anywhere adventure. And it is not be the best choice for someone drawn to it simply because it's cute. (and it is cute.) getting in and out is awkward. The interior is spartan. The se is a basic machine, with a padded roll bar, steel half-doors with side curtains, soft folding top, tilt steering column, a mini-console with two cupholders, skid plates for the fuel tank and transfer case, gas-charged shock absorbers, and p215/75r15 goodyear wrangler all-terrain tires on 15 x 7-inch steel wheels. Air conditioning 895), cloth upholstery 130), and full-metal doors with wind-up windows 125) are extra-cost options. A 4. 0-liter inline-6 is optional 1,280). Otherwise, rubicon is generally comparable to the sport for comfort and convenience equipment. the wrangler unlimited 24,065) and unlimited rubicon 28,535) are essentially long versions of the sport and rubicon models. The 2006 unlimited rubicon remains essentially a stretch-wheelbase version of the standard rubicon. all wranglers come with a fold-down windshield, removable doors and top, and a weatherproof interior. The hard top comes with roll-up windows, a rear wiper-washer and rear defroster. A wide variety of appearance items and accessories are also available, particularly at the upper trim levels. walkaroundthe jeep wrangler is one of the most widely recognized vehicles in the world. Its round headlights, jailhouse grille, and square-edged fenders hark back to the 1940 original. the exterior mirrors are made of plastic, which jeep engineers say holds up better than metal when going off-road. Bumpers are black on all models. Fender flares are black or dark khaki on all but rubicon and rubicon unlimited, where they are metallic gray. other visual cues distinguish the rubicons as well. A 22-inch rubicon nameplate is emblazoned on either side of the hood. Heavy-gauge diamond-plate sill guards are bolted to the body sides to protect the rocker panels from damage and dings from rocks and stumps in the backcountry. Goodyear wrangler 31-inch tires are mounted on 16-inch, five-spoke aluminum wheels with dished faces to protect them from debris and obstacles. Generous ground clearance helps the rubicon traverse the trail. one of the biggest decisions to make when buying a wrangler is selecting the top. Purists prefer the soft top, a high-quality piece of equipment that can be configured according to the weather. Doors may be removed for the maximum open-air experience. The hard top comes with full-height doors and roll-up windows. Rearward visibility is better, and it's further aided by the rear-window defroster, wiper and washer. Wind noise is greatly reduced. The hard top can be removed, although we haven't tried this. Jeep claims that either top is far easier to remove or install than those of pre-2001 models and provides much better sealing from the elements. the additional length of the unlimited models is almost entirely between the door and the rear wheel. How this affects the wranglers rugged-cute look will be a matter of taste. We like how the stretch in length, combined with the fractionally lower sunrider top, gives the wrangler more car-like proportions; but jeep die-hards may hate it for precisely that reason. interiorgetting into a jeep wrangler requires a tall step up. (side steps are optional on some models, but full running boards are not available as they'd be vulnerable on rough trails.) once inside, the cabin is spartan but highly functional. seats and fabrics are comfortable. The easily removable, fold-and-tumble rear seat is equipped with the latch (lower anchors and upper tethers for children) system for mounting child safety seats directly to the structure of the seat. On all models, the interior is weatherproofed, and can be cleaned with a hose, thanks to drain plugs in the floor. The interior light continues to be managed by a switch in the door frame, so a fuse must be pulled to extinguish the light when the wrangler is operated sans doors. the wrangler remains miles away from luxurious, but the current generation models are more comfortable than older generations. The mirror automatically dims when headlights shine on it; this bit of luxury technology may sound out of place in a wrangler, but it's an important feature when the top is off.
