Great luxury sedans, coupes, convertibles and wagons. introductionthe 2011 mercedes-benz e-class is fresh from major revisions last year, and the lineup has now been filled out with the new 2011 e550 cabrio. the new mercedes-benz e550 cabrio features an innovative soft top that's nearly one-inch thick with three layers of acoustic sound dampening, leaves good trunk space, and provides wind protection with the top down. The soft top disappears in 17 silent seconds, as mercedes says. They retain the feeling of robustness and engineering excellence that has defined them for decades. the e-class sits in the middle of the mercedes car line, between the compact c-class and the big s-class. It's the company's best-selling car worldwide, and as such it defines the brand's essence. Every e-class model delivers an excellent balance of passenger space, luxury, style and impressive performance in a practical, manageably sized package. the e-class line includes a two-door coupe joining the familiar sedan, with wagons and convertibles, too. The e-class looks more angular and technical than it used to, but it is quite pleasing to the eye. The chassis is strengthened to improve crash protection, reduce vibration and sharpen handling, without adding weight. Yet if the new-generation e-class cars have a theme, it might be their high-tech control and management systems. That's not surprising for a car that introduced a host of now-familiar features, from antilock brakes to airbags, to mass production. the 2011 mercedes-benz e-class represents the most electronics-intensive model line mercedes has offered to date, and most of the new computer-managed systems focus on safety. A new attention assist system that comes standard monitors up to 70 driving parameters to determine whether the driver is getting drowsy behind the wheel and uses both visual and auditory warnings to tell the driver to pull over for rest. The distronic plus cruise control option features both blind-spot warning and lane-departure warning technology, while automatic self-adjusting headlights automatically dim the brights. And those systems are just the start. beyond the technological wizardry, the e-class remains what it has always been, only maybe a little bit nicer. The 382-horsepower v8 in the mercedes e550 models delivers the turbine-like, overpowered feel that characterizes germany's best autobahn blasters. The turbocharged engine in the mercedes e350 bluetec sedan is the smoothest, quietest diesel available in the united states. It delivers amazing bursts of acceleration for passing, with mileage that surpasses most other cars in this class by about 30 percent. E350 models come with a 3. 5-liter v6. With a screen rising behind the rear seats, passengers are protected from wind buffetting. the e63 amg sedan 87,600) features a 6. 2-liter v8 that generates 518 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. It adds a host of performance upgrades, including a seven-speed transmission with an automatic clutch rather than a conventional torque converter. options include premium package i with comand with navigation system, premium harman/kardon audio with hd radio and sirius satellite radio hardware, heated front seats, rearview camera and rear-glass sunshade. Premium package ii includes package i plus ventilated front seats, a bi-xenon active light system with automatic high-beam control and headlight washers, and keyless entry. Standalone options include rear-seat dvd entertainment 1,850), panoramic sunroof 1,590), split folding rear seat 430). safety features include advanced antilock brakes (abs) and electronic stability program (esp). Active safety systems include attention assist drowsiness monitor. Standard passive safety features include nine airbags: dual frontal, driver's knee-protection, front-passenger side-impact torso, front passenger side-impact pelvis, and full cabin head-protection curtains. Rear passenger side-impact airbags are optional. 4matic all-wheel drive enhances safety, particularly in slippery conditions. walkaroundthe latest-generation mercedes-benz e-class models are generally more angular than their predecessors, with sharper creases. Automotive styling is a subjective process, to be sure, but this latest e-class has been lauded from many corners for its character and pleasing design. besides the familiar sedan and wagon, the line-up includes an e-class coupe and cabriolet (or convertible), which replace cars that had been known as the clk since the mid-1990s. All e-class models share the same underpinnings, and nearly identical exterior dimensions. styling for all e-class variants is quite similar, too, at least from the windshield forward. Every design cue, panel, lamp and piece of glass was changed for 2010. And although they tend to look bigger than their predecessors, more like mercedes' premium s-class, they really aren't. The two-door coupe's roof flows more evenly than the sedans, with a less prominent notch where the rear glass tapers downward. Rear lamps are similar on coupe and sedan, as are the rectangular exhaust tips built into the bumpers, rather than hung below them. mercedes designers took great pains managing airflow through, under and around the e-class, producing a sedan with a drag coefficient of only 0. 25, despite its big, brawny appearance. The company claims that the coupe's cd of just 0. 24 is the best overall figure for any series-production car anywhere. Other things equal, a lower coefficient of drag means less interior noise and better fuel mileage. the e-class wagon is offered in sport trim. That means a bolder three-bar grille, more aggressively flared rocker panels and perforated front brake discs with painted calipers, visible through five-spoke 17-inch wheels. The wagon's roof creates a dramatic teardrop shape in profile, with led taillights that wrap around the rear corners of the car. the e-class cabriolet comes closest in appearance to the coupe. The lower half of the body of the e550 cabriolet is designed by amg, mercedes' partner in high performance, and its sleek edginess reflects that attitude. The power convertible soft top is one inch thick, and performs like a hard top, so well insulated that it actually dampens sound more effectively than the steel roof on the coupe, according to mercedes. It lowers and rises in 17 seconds. the lines of the soft top are not as sleek as the lower half of the car. The rear glass is not expansive, so it could fit in the trunk without taking up too much space. This means more area of fabric around the window, making it look thickish back there, losing some of the beauty of the coupe. And for all its edges in the sheetmetal toward the front of the car, it has fairly round hips, especially noticeable in the cabriolet. interiorthough redesigned for 2010, the e-class cabin retains enough mercedes-style interior appointments to make it comfortably familiar to previous e-class owners. seat-shaped seat controls high on the door panels and seat heating/cooling controls at the very bottom of the center stack make it easy to adjust important things. 2014 mercedes-benz e-class review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Redesigned, substantially revised, in a wide range of models. introductionthe 2014 mercedes-benz e-class comes with a new edgy look, available in many models and iterations. Mercedes counts 11 of them, down to anti-glare continuous high-beam headlamps. because the e-class competes with the cadillac cts and audi a5, it needs to be pretty, and the new face of the 2014 e-class brings it alive. The interior is cleaned up for 2014 as well. over two days in oregon, we drove the 2014 mercedes-benz e250 bluetec sedan, e350 cabriolet, e550 cabriolet, e400 hybrid sport sedan, and e350 4matic wagon. Each has something special to offer. The black paint and brown leather upholstery had something to do with that. the new e-class is more dynamic, improved to the eye from every angle. Mercedes calls it elegant and poised, and it is that, but it's aggressive too. The front end is especially sporty, while character lines on the sides are cleaner. The tweaks keep mercedes moving from old man's car to muscle car. the e350 with the v6 makes 302 horsepower, 273 foot-pounds of torque, and accelerates from zero to 60 in 6. 1 seconds. The e550 with the v8 makes 402 hp and 443 ft-lb, and takes 4. 9 seconds. We prefer the v6 because it's smooth, plenty fast, and more efficient. there's also a 2. 1-liter turbodiesel that makes 195 horsepower with a robust 369 lb-ft of torque, and comes standard with 4matic all-wheel drive; we got 40. 6 miles per gallon driving on two-lanes and freeway. The diesel makes more sense than the v6 hybrid, which delivered just 29. 8 mpg. We got 25. 0 mpg in the v8-powered e550. The diesel is slower than the hybrid but more responsive. all the e-class models come standard with the eco stop/start system, which shuts the engine off when the car stops. The mercedes system is less intrusive than the bmw system. in two days of driving different e-class models, we have no big bad notes, only little ones. Transmission: check. Just know what to expect in acceleration, and get a good feel for the transmission, and the rest is turn-key, in buying a mercedes. the interior is less changed than the exterior. The dashboard is smoother, every inch soft touch, with new two-piece trim in three woods. Changes on the instrument panel for 2014 include a new cluster with nice off-white gauges, and sleeker air vents with an analog clock between them. The seats are a bit different in the models. In the cabriolets they're recaro-like, with tight ribbed leather. as for the active safety enhancements, there's a whole lotta assisting going on here. We have collision prevention assist, parking assist, steering assist, lane-keeping assist, cross-traffic assist, rear-end collision assist, pedestrian recognition assist, and last but not least attention assist. Just kidding. we wonder if some of this assistance might take us into the land of unintended consequences. We'll wait for top gear to take a safety-optioned e-class and drive it toward a brick wall at 30 mph with another one on its tail, to see what happens. There are three super-high-performance e63 amg models. standard equipment on the e350 coupe and cabriolet, e550 coupe and cabriolet, and e350 4matic coupe includes every power thing imaginable. New standard equipment includes eco start/stop. safety equipment standard on all models includes 10 airbags, active head restraints, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, rollover sensor, rearview camera, and tire pressure monitor. New standard safety equipment includes collision prevention assist, attention assist, and led headlamps and taillights. Optional equipment includes full led lighting, surround view camera, and parking assist. The driver assistance package includes steering assist, lane-keeping assist, cross-traffic assist, rear-end collision assist, and pedestrian recognition assist. walkaroundthe new 2014 e-class looks way more dynamic than the 2013. It's edgy and sporty now, especially in the front end. The new face might be faulted for being less smooth than it might, but it brings the e-class alive. the led headlamps are bigger and sleeker for 2014, and the grille is bigger and blacker, with only two bars and the big benz star moved into the center. But it's the amg models, with wide flowing faux air intakes in each corner and a wide horizontal dam below the bumper, that make the e look like it's trying to be a mustang. Mercedes prefers to say the styling forms a visual link to the brand's high-performance sports car models. This describes the sport trim, not luxury, which is less changed, with the star still a hood ornament. Sport places the three-pointed star on the grille. the character lines on the sides are smoother now, with gently rising shoulder lines to the trunk lid, under windows unbroken by b-pillars. Horizontal led taillamps widen the view from the rear. Overall it's elegant, dynamic and poised, says mercedes, and we agree. interiorthe interior is less changed for 2014. Gone is the gear selector lever on two-door e-class, making room for storage and big cupholders. It makes sense to create usable space when mechanically possible. Shifting is back to the future, with a lever on the right side of the steering column. Mercedes says there are virtually unlimited possibilities for individual configuration of exterior and interior colors. Changes on the instrument panel include a new cluster with nice off-white gauges, and sleeker air vents with an analog clock between them. Set the heated seats on low, never get a chill. The aircap wind deflector over the windshield rises at 25 mph, and reduces cabin turbulence mostly in the back seat. Another wind deflector between the headrests rises when the rear seatbelts are snapped. the e-class cabriolet is the quietest soft top in its class, after careful development with high acoustic standards. It looks handsome in pictures. the seats are a bit different in the models. It's a common reflection to see in cars at times, but on this day it seemed like the vents were painted in the window.
