2008 scion xb review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Scion says that owners wanted their xbs to be bigger. Since it takes three years to produce a new car, the requests to expand the box must have started coming early. the new xb is indeed a bigger box, but it doesn't look so much like a box any more. And it isn't, as the increased length reduces the squareness. The styling is considerably improved. Plastic surgery on the chin has made a huge difference, and the other edges and angles are much softer, making the xb more attractive and less funny looking. it's also less distinctive than before, but it's still distinctive compared to other cars of this size. Utility-wise, it's like the honda fit (front-wheel drive, five-door with good cargo space), but now it looks more like the honda element. the new xb is 12 inches longer, on a wheelbase that's just 4 inches longer; this means bigger overhangs, which goes against the trend, as most new vehicles increase the wheelbase more than the length, efficient packaging that increases stability. The xb is 2. 8 inches wider, though, and that adds stability. And the wheels have been increased in size to 16 inches, allowing larger disc brakes, front and rear. The xb's brakes are very good. the xb features electric power steering, which does away with belts, pulleys and fluid. It's quite nimble and fun to drive around town. the bigger box provides an increase in cargo capacity, but 4. 6 inches of legroom has been lost in the front seat, from 45. 3 inches down to 40. 7; in the rear, the legroom remains the same. The front seats recline almost fully, and the 60/40 rear seats drop flat with one easy pull of a lever. not visible, but just as significant, is the whopping 50 percent increase in power. The xb now uses the same 2. 4-liter engine that powers the quick tc coupe. It makes 155 horsepower, an increase of no less than 55 over the 1. 5-liter engine in the 2004-2007 xb. The engine employs all of toyota's considerable variable valve timing technology (vvt-i), and gets 22/28 miles per gallon, at the epa's ulev-ii (ultra-low) emissions ratings. The old chin stuck out from under a thin grille, but the new unit is cohesive, still with a thin black grille but it's almost flush with the bumper below it. The headlamps are more shapely now, swept back, although they stick out at the sides, like bubbles. Below the thick plastic bumper under the grille, there's another black grille that sucks in air for the bottom of the radiator. At each side there are thin vertical black rubber things, apparently meant to be faux air intakes for brakes. They lend depth to the otherwise massive and flat valance. the longer body, wide c-pillar, rounded fender flares and loss of the protruding chin make the xb look less square, from any angle. interiorthe interior feels as changed as the exterior looks. There might have been a big loss in front seat legroom, but the driver still has a commanding view of the road. That's exceptional if not unique, for a car of this size. The short nose, big windshield, elevatable driver's seat, and far-away dashboard create this feel. The glass is upright, it doesn't sweep back. there's less of a stretch from the front-seat passenger's knees to the good-sized glovebox. It's mounted low so it folds down, possibly on the passenger's shins. Above the glovebox there is a long thin tray which might be useful if it had a liner that offered some grip, instead of the hard slick vinyl. charcoal is the only color for the fabric seats, which are comfortable and well bolstered, although they're shapeless and light on padding in the rear. The fabric isn't as sturdy, outdoorsy or cool as that in the mazda3, but charcoal makes the most of the cloth. At the far left, is the information display, revealing things like fuel mileage and range. Then comes the clock, which is highly readable, unlike so many, the color is orange and it has an eave to reduce being washed out by sunlight. The digital speedometer is excellent, with big numbers that are, like the clock, eminently readable. Beyond these are the gas gauge and temperature gauge. scion has added a lot of sound dampening material to the xb, and it seems like most of it must be in the firewall. Or else the engine is just quiet. We longed for simpler controls. But the flipside was that the projector low beams are treacherously weak. And for some reason there's only one backup light, on the driver's side. 2005 scion xb review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Stylish, inexpensive and practical. introductionthe scion xb is a box on wheels with strong styling that grabs attention, often from members of the opposite sex. It's a five-passenger wagon that doesn't look like a wagon. Nor does it look like a toyota, though it's built by toyota and carries the company's high standards of quality, durability and reliability. as a result, the scion xb feels tight. And it's quiet, with little wind noise and no squeaks or rattles. Inside, it's roomy and has a nice interior with controls that are easy to operate. The driver and passengers sit upright in chair-like seats and enjoy excellent visibility. These comprise both appearance and functional items. Among the eye-candies are clear tail lamp lenses, rear bumper applique, body side graphics, led interior lighting, carbon fiber shift knob, sport pedals, and an instrument panel applique. Adding function are a leather-wrapped steering wheel (red or gray), front strut tower brace, fog lamps, cup holder illumination, removable roof rack, 6-cd changer, satellite radio tuner and antenna, cold-air induction system, and an assortment of handling and performance goodies from toyota racing development. walkaroundthe styling of the scion xb is polarizing. It drew numerous accolades, looks of approval, and positive hand signals from people in miami and south florida. the scion xb looks like nothing else on the road. Sheets of flat metal and glass on the sides join at right angles with a flat roof, a flat hood and a flat liftgate. Only the barest hint of a curve softens the front end and windshield. A honda element looks curvaceous when parked alongside this exercise in extreme angularity. the wheels and tires look tiny under the boxy exterior. Aftermarket alloys that fill the wheel wells would likely improve its looks. tall doors open wide. Top-hinged outside door handles fit smoothly into the xb's slab-sided styling, but they're less ergonomic and less friendly to fingernails than open, full-round handles like those found on the xb's more traditionally styled sibling, the xa. The seats are more like chairs than car seats, raised somewhat above the mostly flat floor. Side bolsters on the seat back and seat bottom cushions are minimal making for easy entry and exit. The floor-mounted shift lever falls readily to hand, as does the hand-operated emergency brake. Pedals are ergonomically placed. gauges are centered on the top of the dash instead of being directly in front of the driver. Scion says this makes the instruments easier to see because they're closer to the driver's line of sight through the windshield and focal plane. No doubt this also saves cost in a car built for markets around the world that use both right-hand and left-hand steering. We found the blank landscape between the spokes of the steering wheel takes some acclimation. At night, we kept wondering, 'where are the dash lights?' once acclimated, the driver finds a large, black-on-white speedometer, a small tachometer and a small fuel gauge. the broad expanses of glass make outward visibility stellar, good for heavy traffic and tight parking spaces. Big outside mirrors afford a good view rearward. interior quality is better than decent, especially given the xb's price point. Fit and finish are up to toyota standards. The stereo is mounted above the air conditioning controls because they're operated more often. Temperature and ventilation settings are adjusted with basic knobs, buttons and lever. But the stereo plays to people used to directional buttons and pda cursor pads. the xb's exterior styling suggests a roomy interior and it delivers on this promise. Compared with the honda civic and vw golf, the xb leads in virtually every passenger compartment measurement, and generally not by small amounts. Scion xb delivers about 6 inches more front and rear headroom and 3-5 inches more legroom than civic and golf offer. Amazingly, the xb boasts nearly 3 inches more front-seat headroom and 7 inches more rear-seat headroom than the element, despite the element being 6 inches taller. The element easily tops the xb, however, offering 74. 6 cubic feet of cargo space versus the xb's 43. 4 cubic feet. ordering the available subwoofer takes up 2 square feet of floor space in the cargo area. Worse, it's mounted right smack in the middle rear of the cargo area and is really in the way when loading or unloading materials. There are the usual map pockets in the doors, cupholders front and rear and so on. There's a nook in the lower half of the dash to the left of the steering column, a cranny to the right of the column and a shelf-like opening above the glove box. driving impressionthe ride is firm. At first, the xb didn't generate a lot of confidence when braking and cornering, especially when they're done at the same time, but confidence in its capabilities increases with time behind the wheel. Body lean in corners is minimal, notwithstanding the tallish glass house. It's difficult to envision the xb in a situation requiring the vehicle stability control system, but it's standing by in the event it's needed, ready to eliminate any skidding. Steering assist is about right. Torque peaks at rather high engine speeds, so revving it up in lower gears is advisable for merging onto freeways. Scion xb gets excellent gas mileage: 31/35 mpg on the epa city/highway test with the manual, 30/34 with the automatic. the automatic is responsive enough. Gear changes with the manual shifter could have been crisper, but clutch take-up is smooth. Brakes feel solid and hold well on steep hills. the scion is a small toyota. Is it a scion styling thing, like one earring or something? scion has put special effort into the air conditioning, and it shows. The door handles, however, show little thought about ergonomics. They're horizontal, thin, barely two inches long, and tapered to a point. most of the slim space between the seats is taken by two fixed cupholders, a slot for a cellphone, and the parking brake lever, leaving room for only a small console compartment rearward between the seats. the 60/40-split rear seats fold flat easily, creating good cargo space behind the front seats. The front passenger seat reclines, and that's good for naps, but with the passenger seat down there isn't any more practical cargo space because it reclines right on top of the folded rear seat, so it sticks way up there. The latest epa ratings are 22/28 mpg city/highway for the xb. throttle response is excellent and steady. The revs climb right up through the numbers on the tachometer, until the transmission upshifts at 6100 or 6200 rpm (even if it's in manual mode). The engine doesn't feel like it's working hard, it feels like it loves every chance it gets to leap between 3000 rpm and 6000 rpm. just don't forget that the scion xb is not a sports car. Or maybe it was the five-speed manual transmission we were wishing for. This might be an annoyance if the xb weren't so eager about wanting to zoom forward.
